Remove an advising hold:
Academic advising is required for all undergraduate students prior to both Fall and Spring semesters. All undergraduate students will have this advising hold on their account until they meet with their advisor. Once you meet with your advisor, he or she will remove your hold and you can register for classes.
Help prepare your four-year plan:
Once you have decided on a major the next step is planning out a class schedule and determining how long it will take for you to graduate. This schedule of classes is what your advisor will refer to as your four-year plan. Your advisor will help you develop a four-year plan that will give you the classes you need and determine the quickest path to graduation.
Struggling with grades? Roommate problems?
An academic advisor may not be able to help with your grades or improve your relationship with your roommate. However, they will know what resources are available on campus and who can help.
If you are having personal problems you can contact the Counseling and Testing Center for assistance.
You should plan to meet with your academic advisor soon after being admitted to the University. The sooner you meet with your advisor the sooner your advising hold will be lifted so you can register for classes. Some classes fill up quick, so register as soon as you can to ensure you get your first choice in classes.
Other reasons to meet with your advisor include:
- Discuss concerns with study skills or difficult course work
- Discuss career considerations, changing majors, or interests
- To add, drop, or audit a course
- If you are having a difficulty with a specific class
- If you are struggling with your overall coursework or class load
