SKIN DEEP

Vision for an Inclusive Community

Skin Deep is a two-day intensive workshop.  More importantly, it is a developmental experience that will involve personal work.  It is an intense experience where we work to understand the dynamics and effects of race and racism, sexism and homophobia while engaging in authentic dialogue across & within groups.

Skin Deep provides students with the opportunity to dismantle the dynamics of social oppression.  Social oppression, fear, insecurities, isolation, misinformation and stereotypes impact each one of us, whether we are socialized into positions of power & privilege or a “victim” role.

Skin Deep provides a forum for students to engage one another through honest sharing and active listening.  Participants will have the opportunity to bring their whole selves to the table.  Through the process of the intensive we will create a safe environment for each voice to be heard, to share openly and honestly.

Key Themes:

Racism                                                             Discrimination

Prejudice                                                         Social Identities

White Privilege                                               Code Switching

Assimilation                                                    Socialization

Skin Deep will take place September 25th-27th, at the Best Western Lodge at the Rivers Edge in Orofino, Idaho.  We will be departing Friday September 25th at 5pm, and returning at 1pm on Sunday, September 27th.  Since there is a limit of 28 student participants, I will be selecting paricipants to create a balance in social group identities as much as possible. For students selected to participate, all expences will be covered by the Office of Diversity, Equity & Community at the University of Idaho.

You must sign up via email: medwards@uidaho.edu by September, 8th.  Students will receive conformation by September 11th.  Please include in your email a brief personal statement (a short paragraph) stating why you would like to participate in Skin Deep.  Include Name, Major, Racial/Ethnic identity, Sex, Sexual Orientation and Religion.  Also, list any involvement in student organizations or leadership positions.
